A major development has emerged in the investigation into the death of Tasia Fortune, the 29-year-old Black woman whose body was discovered hanging from a tree behind a vacant home in Jackson, Mississippi.
Jackson police announced Friday, September 11, that 51-year-old Jarques Ratliff had been arrested in connection with Fortune’s death. CBS News reports that police said Ratliff was arrested on a murder charge.
The arrest came after the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office officially classified Fortune’s death as a homicide Thursday evening. Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney said investigators had already developed the case sufficiently to prepare search and arrest warrants, but were waiting for the medical examiner’s determination before executing them.
Fortune was found on August 3, 2026, hanging from a tree in the backyard of a vacant home in the 500 block of Road of Remembrance in west Jackson. The circumstances immediately generated national attention and questions, particularly because of Mississippi’s history of racial terror and lynching.
Police have not publicly disclosed exactly how Fortune was killed, and they have not announced a motive. Chief Brackney said Ratliff had an “association” with Fortune but declined to explain the nature of their relationship while the investigation remains active.
According to police, investigators interviewed nearly 15 people, gathered forensic evidence and pursued leads during the investigation. Officers executed two search warrants Friday but initially did not find Ratliff at the locations being searched. Officers subsequently encountered him walking along Capitol Street and took him into custody without incident.
And this case may be far from finished.
Chief Brackney said additional arrests are expected, stressing that Ratliff’s arrest represents a significant development rather than the conclusion of the investigation.
Fortune’s mother, Christy Spivey, said she cried and thanked police after learning about the arrest. But she also said the family still has significant unanswered questions, including what motivated her daughter’s killing and what evidence ultimately led investigators to Ratliff.
Fortune was a mother of four. Her mother has consistently maintained that she did not believe her daughter took her own life. Before her death, Fortune had reportedly discussed starting a cleaning business and was attempting to rebuild her life.
The investigation remains active.
