Sean “Diddy” Combs could be released from federal prison sooner than previously expected.
The music mogul’s projected release date has reportedly been moved to January 24, 2028, one month earlier than the previously listed date of February 23, 2028. The latest date is based on Federal Bureau of Prisons records reviewed by media outlets.
Combs is currently serving his sentence at FCI Fort Dix, a low-security federal correctional institution in New Jersey. He received a 50-month federal prison sentence in October 2025 after being convicted on two counts involving transportation to engage in prostitution. He was acquitted of the more serious racketeering conspiracy and sex-trafficking charges brought against him.
His Release Date Keeps Changing
Combs’ projected release date has shifted several times.
After sentencing, his release was initially projected for May 2028. At one point it moved back to June 4, 2028 before subsequently being advanced to April 25, then April 15, and eventually February 23, 2028. The latest reported update moves the date forward again to January 24, 2028.
It is important to describe January 24 as a projected release date, rather than a guarantee. Federal release calculations can change as sentence credits, programming and other administrative factors are applied.
The Timing Is Getting Attention
The latest change comes shortly after reports that Combs was involved in an altercation with another inmate at Fort Dix and subsequently placed in solitary confinement.
That timing is likely to generate questions because disciplinary problems are normally associated with potential consequences rather than an earlier release.
However, there is currently no solid evidence that the fight caused the January date. The Bureau of Prisons generally does not publicly explain the details behind an individual inmate’s release-date calculations, so those two developments should not be presented as directly connected without additional evidence.
