Baltimore police to roll out plan for increased traffic enforcement

Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley has announced plans to increase traffic stops for traffic violations in the coming weeks.

In an interview on WBAL NewsRadio’s Jayne Miller show, Worley said that the move aims to address the rise in fatal crashes, severe injuries, and road rage incidents linked to speeding and other traffic violations.

“Believe it or not, it is one of my pet peeves over the last couple of months, more so, especially the more I drive around in the city,” Worley said.

Worley described why the police department plans to focus on traffic enforcement.

“Part of the reason is, not only the fact that we’re disregarding the these signs and the speed limits and the stop signs and the parking signs, but the fact that we have vehicles speeding that are causing more fatal crashes and more severe injuries,” Worley said.

Worley expressed concern about the surge in road rage, noting an increase in incidents involving firearms, leading to shootings.

“What’s happening is so many people were carrying guns and the road rage are leading to more and more shootings,” he said. “We have them probably one or two a week where it’s either a shooting at or a shooting or something really egregious. That would not have happened five or six years ago had it not been for the guns being here and the road rage that people express for simple things that really shouldn’t amount to anger issues like that.”

Jury deliberating in trial of man accused of killing Officer Keona Holley

Deliberations are underway in the trial of a man accused of killing a police officer.Elliot Knox is charged with killing Justin Johnson and Baltimore City police officer Keona Holley in the early morning hours of Dec. 16, 2021. Both victims were shot multiple times about 90 minutes apart. Holley was shot while in her patrol car on Pennington Avenue in Curtis Bay. Johnson was shot six times in his back while sitting in his car on Lucia Avenue in Yale Heights. Prosecutors said security camera video, cellphone and DNA evidence put Knox and co-defendant Travon Shaw in the areas of the shootings. Another jury convicted Shaw in Johnson’s killing.

The jury got the case at around 2:15 p.m. Monday afternoon. During closing statements, the prosecutor told jurors, “This was a hit. This was targeted somehow. They knew where she was. They executed her in her car while she worked.”

He argued Knox was closest to Holley’s car and fired the shots. No motive was given.

JetBlue and Spirit Airlines Permanently Call Off $3.8 Billion Merger

The anticipated merger between JetBlue and Spirit Airlines has officially been called off, with both low-cost carriers deciding to scrap the $3.8 billion deal. This decision comes after a US judge blocked the merger two months ago, citing concerns that it would harm consumers by reducing competition in the airline industry.

JetBlue’s CEO Joanna G and Spirit’s CEO Ted Christie both expressed disappointment over the failed merger, acknowledging that regulatory obstacles prevented them from moving forward with the deal. The Biden Administration, which has been staunchly against airline mergers, argued that the merger would lead to increased ticket prices for consumers.

US Attorney General Merrick Garland praised the decision to cancel the merger, stating that it was “yet another victory for the Justice Department’s work on behalf of American consumers.” The Justice Department has been closely monitoring the airline industry and taking steps to prevent anticompetitive practices.

USPS warns not to use their blue mailboxes

When it comes to mailing letters, many people do it by dropping their envelopes in the United States Postal Service’s blue collection bins placed in neighborhoods across America. However, the USPS is now warning would-be mailers that those blue boxes might not be the safest option.

The Postal Service explained that unfortunately, the collection bins have become very attractive to thieves looking to steal identities or checks, especially at specific times and on specific days. The agency stated, “The biggest variable enticing these criminals to steal are customers depositing mail into blue collection boxes after the last collection of the day or during Sundays and federal holidays.”

To protect residents wanting to use their services, the USPS has some advice, stating, “If customers simply used retail service or inside wall drop slots to send their U.S. Mail, instead of depositing it to sit outside overnight or through the weekend, blue collection boxes would not be as enticing after business hours to mail thieves for identity theft and check-washing schemes.”

Thieves Reportedly Steal $30,000 in Sneakers From from San Fernando Sneaker Store

The owners of Hype Beast Kicks, a specialty shoe store in San Fernando, are reeling after a brazen break-in resulted in the theft of approximately $30,000 worth of high-end footwear. This isn’t the first time criminals have targeted the store. In fact, this is the second time in the three years since the store opened that it has been hit. The thieves, armed and masked, smashed their way into the store in the middle of the night, making off with merchandise as if they were kids in a candy store.

The store owners, Mario and his father, are understandably frustrated and feel like they are living in the Wild West. They believe that laws need to be tougher against criminals who commit these types of crimes, as retail crimes seem to be plaguing Southern California.

The surveillance footage captured the criminals arriving in a white sedan and using a large rock to shatter the store’s glass window. The thieves were seen on camera grabbing shoes and causing chaos in the store before fleeing the scene.
